trying to explain

she said she dreamt

of thugs and dogs

that chased me.

in mine i slept inside

a vast human hive

shaped like a pyramid.

i'd rather be chased by

brooms and mops.

the cold could not be explained,

by dead songs or distant sirens

waiting for the mercy or the joke,

the sound of the universe

when nobody's home,

the documents and scraps

of paper smeared

with policies and poems.

the sentimental glow that clings

to the stones of dead empires

and faded snapshots.

-

it’s easier to float a needle

in a glass of water.

but i kept looking.

in the storm-bared roots

of stolen streams,

the trees that lived through

cortez and the pharaohs,

stalingrad and woodstock.

a crumbled fort

returning to sand,

might be shelter for a picnic,

a place to frolic

in the spaces that

escaped attention.

i found an antler in the gravel.

he'd shed it in the willows

besidea shrunken pool

with black tadpoles

wriggling at the edges

and two snakes trying

to eat the same fish.

one had the head,

the other the tail.

neither willing to let go,

and for a moment

it seemed to explain,

everything.

the inner empire

the fields get burned
on the short days, the ones

with forty degrees of dank
and eight hours of stone gray light

hate speak and gut knives,
free shipping with rewards

divorces, doritos and double wides,

a sign thumb-tacked to the bulletin board
at the mini mart, now hiring:

new century correctional facility, inc.
good salary and benefits

down in the corner of the board
on the back of a motel six postcard:

replica telecaster guitar, $80.
white body, fair condition, plays good

so brandon borrowed forty bucks
from jimmy and bought it

covered the windows in the shed
with cardboard and started trying

to do zeppelin. he found the notes ok,
although with no panache,

filled in the gaps with his own.
alison liked to listen, made up songs

sung so quietly no one
but the cat could hear.

their mom was too wasted to care

so when they were seventeen
and sixteen, and alison

was writing songs,
they hit the road.

busking outside malls
in santa clarita and riverside,

anaheim, till they got
busted by the mall cops,

bailed by the daughter of a former
south vietnamese general.

she owned a bar
and thought that maybe

brandon and alison might appeal
to the kids who'd grown up bored

in the shadow of disneyland.

she's screaming on the phone
about big flags and black swimming pool water
because jimmy's late again with the child support.

because he had to make a payment on his bass boat.

susie throws her mentholated newport butt
into the pool and washes down another oxy
with the last ounce of her lukewarm bud.

jimmy says he's got some free firewood
and a recliner he picked up on the curb
and a kitten for alison and brandon if she wants it.

just get me the money, i saw that goddamned
rebel flag you're flying on your truck, you lowlife fuck
the bill for it was on my credit card, and two hundred
rounds of ammo for your bushmaster.

and this swimming pool, you promised to get it drained.

hey wait a goddamned minute, susie, why don't you ask
that greasy motel manager you've been fucking?
instead of giving him your ass for free.

i'm sick of paying for his pony ride on the susie merry-go-round

what are you talking about, jimmy?
merry-go-round? you got a lot of nerve.

oh yeah? brandon told me what he saw, you gave
that greasy asshole a trip around the world on the floor
of the fucking living room while the kids were there

no way, jimmy, i never done anything while they were home
brandon's just making shit up cuz he don't like randy.
he an allison were at mom's all day.

no he wasn't, he an allison snuck back over and looked in the window
and eight-year olds couldn't make up the shit he saw you pullin.

well whatta you care jimmy? you don't do anything for those kids
'cept buy them crap and make promises you never keep.
you broke their hearts way more than i ever have.

i'll try and get you something monday,
j.d. owes me for that thing last week

i don't give a shit what j.d. owes you jimmy,
just get me the money, ok? click.

toads and princesses

the boasts of toads:
lust takes them into traffic
-and leveling consequences.

unless they somehow find
the miracle road, hit split
aces with a pair of jacks.

i'm familiar with that track
though i seldom win at cards,
i kept looking for the princess

in the deck, between
the aces and the clubs
as if april followed november

just a clown at the microphone
hoping for a warm deceleration
in the pace of time, because

enough yes is rare,
some effort is required,
some thoughts to spare

in this dim room full of guzzlers
ordering another round
of easy deception,

with chasers laced with
sunny paradises
unlikely to be found.

the taste and the touch of the song

i know that song,
the one about angels

the one about marching and guns

the one about lovers unreachable
the one about days in the sun

then i say cicadas and you cry

all the places where memory attaches
like the lightest touch of lips on eyelashes

there can be no such thing
as stolen fruit, no crime in picking,

or it wouldn't be so sweet
the scent and the color sing:

eat me.
