resurrections on 24th street

on the sidewalk
black splashes of flattened chewing gum
a spray painted stencil reads:
i want you so bad

a tiny sticker on a sidewalk chair,
sun rays and storm clouds
with an inscription overlaid:
my last days on earth

in a street tree,
teddy bears hug branches
strung with christmas lights

the plywood in the windows
of Roosevelt's Tamale Parlor
has been removed, the ancient
neon sign is lit again,
the smell of chiles
corn and cumin at the door
