some observations while sitting on the waterfront

at the ordinary moment when
the sun breaks the silhouette
of the office tower
and the pigeon picks
the sidewalk crumbs
the ferry clock strikes six

some kind of screaming super bike
skids to make a red light.
the amtrak shuttle disembarks
and a tall woman dressed in camouflage
kisses her girlfriend who stretches
up on tiptoes, beaming.

a scrawny blonde in black
with spike-heeled boots
leads a tiny dog
dressed in a pink sweater.
there are too many cool guys
sporting shades.

all this sunset funeral attire,
an exercise class is doing jumping jacks
and pushups on the sidewalk
while a novelist looking very serious
speaks from a podium in the bookstore
to an audience of ten.

two young men at the cafe talk about stocks,
covering shorts, percentages and puts.
how quaint. will they turn to hawking
semi-used smart phones, HD televisions,
and leather office chairs?
what're the percentages on that?
